The chicken came first

If you read my other blog, you might remember me talking about our chickens. We got them when they were newly hatched...

...and they were the cutest things ever! Can I just tell you that baby chicks grow up way too fast? Yeah, it wasn't long before one of our "chickens" started crowing. That wasn't a fun discovery.

So now we have two chickens left. They've started a new chapter...

Do not try to adjust your computer screen - that is the color of the eggs! Aren't they gorgeous?! Our chickens are Easter Eggers, and that kind of chicken lays fun colored eggs. It looks like the color of choice for our chickens will be this lovely greenish-blue. The color is so pretty it makes me want to go get some matching paint and paint something! Hmmm... Could be a future project in the making...

Have you ever thought about getting chickens? It's been a lot of fun having them! My daughter just loves them...

If you get bantams (a smaller sized chicken), they don't take up a whole lot of room. They aren't really high maintenance, you'll get the best eggs you've ever tasted, and the poop is great for your garden! Plus, they're really entertaining. We've spent quite a bit of time watching chicken antics around here. Raising chickens has been a new thing for me - not a lot of chickens where I grew up in Southern California! But it really has been a great experience. Maybe I've got more farmer in me than I thought!

Now if I could just talk my husband into getting a fainting goat...

I've always wanted chickens. I think it started when I coveted my mother-in-law's old Queen Anne style coop that matches her house and she is using for lawnmower storage. It's in Wisconsin though and here I am in Virginia. What kind of coop do you have? I've said it before, I'll say it again, that is a very cute girly you have there.

Robin - I'm not sure exactly what kind of coop it is - my husband shopped around online and found one for a good price. If you'd like, I'll get that information for you - just let me know. Hubby then built the surrond out of lumber and chicken wire to keep the racoons out.

Are you planning any egg shell projects with those pretty eggs?

Helen - I'm thinking I just might have to do some fun Easter projects with them! I'll just have to come up with something good...

I can't get over how big the chicks have gotten. It doesn't seem like long ago that you got them. The eggs are just beautiful! LOVE that color. Hey isn't that the Pantone's 2011 color of the year? Oh nevermind... that is so last years color.

And as far as the goats... I totally want one. Never ending entertainment for the kids. Heck I want 2!

Wendy. I want chickens AND goats! I grew up around them and they're just hilarious to watch. Completely ridiculous!

It's my far-fetched dream to leash-train a goat and walk through my neighborhood with it. Why? Because it's BOMB, that's why. You my friend, just scored major points in my book. Way to be.

JML - Okay, you said leash-train a goat, and my mind went right to trying to take the goat into stores by saying it's a service goat. Oh, yeah...
